Contradictions

Contradiction is part of a series of layered collage work made in response to my meditation experience. I was naturally inspired to create works of calm and rest. However, while engaging in art-making, I ended up uncovering feelings I did not know I had buried under. What came up was turmoil and perhaps even a subtle hint of anxiety - very much the opposite of what I wanted to imbue in my art.

As I continued experimenting, and with some mindfulness, I found subtle beauty emerging in the works. It was a contradicting experience. Rather than I as the artist informing the work, the work itself was lending me a learning experience about myself.

The process of making the art made me realise that this is part and parcel of life – there is no perfection, only a series of contradictions. And in learning to accept the imperfections of life, beauty has a chance to arise.

Four out of six Contradictions paper series was selected for a group exhibition at Maya Gallery, Singapore from 18 to 28 July 2018, titled Liquid Light: An Exhibition of Contemporary Watercolours.
